Runes – Sowilo
The Runes are magical in nature, but also a practical written language. It is thought that the alphabetical order of these symbols derives from the Etruscans in Northern Italy – in the border region of Switzerland and Austria. The Germanic Tribes in the Alps merged their symbols with the Etruscan form of writing to create a working system for their people. The runes were used for good luck, love, blessings, a good harvest, victory in battle (engraved in sword blades), and divination.
Sowilo is the bright life giving symbol of the sun. In Northern countries the sun was all powerful for crop growth, fertility of animals and healthy members of the community. The sun has always been associated with powerful gods/goddess because light is good, bright and brings a sense of clarity. The sun has long been associated with cereal crops; from the first buds to the final harvest the sun dictates the seasons. The spiritual essence of light cannot be underestimated – it removes darkness and deception and offers a clear view.
