Corn Dolly, Pink/Aqua
Corn Dollies (kern Idol) are created and displayed in harvest celebrations to thank Mother Earth. Litha, Lammas and Mabon are all harvest festivals, though Lammas celebrates the harvesting of grain crops (wheat, barley, oats, rye). Celtic and European cultures believed the spirit of the grain would be homeless if all the crop was harvested. Female figures called corn-mothers or corn-maidens were created from the last of the harvest so the spirit of the grain had somewhere to live in winter. In spring the “corn dolly” would be ploughed into the first furrow of the new season. The traditions are different in each town and so are the designs of the dolls or symbols. Some have parades where wreathes are worn upon the head and people are chosen to create or store the doll. The word corn doll is misleading; corn evolved from ‘kern,’ the old English word for grain, and “dolly” is thought to have evolved from “idol”), corn dollies weren’t made of corn. Harvest celebrations dates differ in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Bring the harvest into your house with decorations and bread making. Corn dolls are a symbol of good luck and fertility.
