Yule Festival– Bell Earrings, Silver/White
Yule or Winter Solstice is a popular European festival focusing on dormant winter and renewal in spring. The Yule log, representing the Fire Mother and the Sun God, were burnt in an effort to bring back the warmth of the sun. Evergreen tree branches were brought inside and decorated with fruits or shiny things. These European traditions were adopted by Christianity, with both Jesus and St Nicolas as figureheads of Christmas. A snowy winter bought fear to the ancestors who didn’t have the luxuries of electricity for heat and light. Bells were used to scare away bad spirits that may lurk in the cold dark season. The deciduous trees are bare of leaves, the real growth in underground, like the European/American animals that hibernate. The southern hemisphere is not as cold unless you are near mountainous areas.
Bells have long been the used by shaman of many cultures to scare off dark and negative energies. Bells are used in ceremonies to clear away unpleasant spirits. People of many cultures are known to have used bells for scaring away anything that seems out of normal state of living, even harsh winds or weather patterns that seemed malicious to their well-being. Bells are also used to call people to ceremonies, schools and transport such as trams and especially sleighs. Bells are used in ceremonial dances of many cultures to celebrate joy and happiness. Celebrate with a fire or candles, a vegetable roast, Mulled wine, decorated evergreen branches and ask for the sun to return.
