Description

Trade Beads No. 3. Brown & Forest

Trade beads were used by European explorers as they traders in new territories between the 16th and 20th century. Trade beads have been found in Africa, United States, Canada, South America and Europe. The bead jewellery was mixed and colourful and came from Venice and other parts of Europe. Powdered class beads from Africa were also made to mimic the Venetian style beads. The beads were a type of currency in less developed countries; this also included the slave trade. This is a reminder to honour the difficult path that so many ancestors had to face as nations strive for dominance. In much earlier times traded mixed beads of class, stone, wood and shell were used as status symbols in the burials of Celts and Vikings – a testament to early travel and trade.

Neclace length: 54cm.  Made in Australia, from imported beads.
