Runes – Naudhiz
The Runes are magical in nature, but also a practical written language. It is thought that the alphabetical order of these symbols derives from the Etruscans in Northern Italy – in the border region of Switzerland and Austria. The Germanic Tribes in the Alps merged their symbols with the Etruscan form of writing to create a working system for their people. The runes were used for good luck, love, blessings, a good harvest, victory in battle (engraved in sword blades), and divination.
Naudiz or need-fire is fire started in harsh times to ask the goddess for protection and help in restoring balance to the land and its people. It is thought that most northern fire ceremonies started because of need-fires. Though Naudiz speaks of times of trial, it is often when we are in difficult times that we have great surges of growth that lift us back to balance. This is a rune of contemplation before action. Naudiz asks you to keep positive and work on problems bit by bit until they are resolved. Strength comes when you examine your weaknesses. Only you can bring change to your life. Light a candle or (safe) outdoor fire and ask the ancient Goddess for inspiration or direction. Both fire and the heat of the sun represent rebirth and fertility to the land and people.
