Om is a symbol of peace and tranquillity. In Hindu beliefs OM is the first sound of creation – it is a sound, a breath, used in steady repetition in meditation to find enlightenment. OM represents the three states of the human condition – waking, dreaming and deep sleep. This sacred syllable represents Brahman the impersonal Absolute of Hinduism — omnipotent, omnipresent, and the source of everything. Brahman is incomprehensible, so a symbol and its sound is a link to experience the Unknowable. Om, therefore, represents both the un-manifest and manifest aspects of God.
