Lammas Festival – Butterfly Earrings, Purple
Lammas (Lughnasadh) represents the sun and highly important wheat harvest. In Ireland harvest began after Lammas. Lammas signals the time to start storing for winter, especially in Europe, though we do have modern conveniences these days. The first loaf is baked and shared, corn dollies are made, wreath making and gathering of friends and family. In Irish tradition butterflies are said to represent the souls of the departed, giving them the power to cross into the otherworld. In Greek the word for soul is butterfly (psyche). There is no doubt the beauty and lightness of the butterfly and its stages of development inspired these beliefs in Europe. The Butterfly is a symbol of transformation. In stories and fables the appearance of butterflies created magical moments; even fairies have wings similar to butterflies. The Butterfly is a symbol of joy, colour and the dance of life. Thank Lugh the sun god and pregnant goddess for the fertile land. Celebrate renewal with your bread and salad feast at Lammas.
