The history of the Knights Templar is a story of divine love, pilgrimage, brotherhood, war and betrayal. As The knights of God for the Catholic Church the Templers went on many military crusades to the holy land and to protect pilgrims along the way in the early stages (Israel, Palestine, Syria, Egypt and Turkey (Constantinople). When the crusades ended the Templars were wealthy, powerful and revered, and King Philip IV of France was financially indebted to them. King Philip forced Pope Clement V to supress the order with false charges in 1307. The Templers were imprisoned and striped of their wealth and power. The trial proved their innocents, but the pope disbanded the order to keep the peace with King Philip. In 2001 the Chinon parchment was discovered (and released by the Vatican) of the 1308 trial, revealing that the knights Templar were innocent of heresy. The betrayal of Templars by king Philip and pope Clement V began the slaughter and imprisonment and final stand at Castle of Monzon in 1309 Spain. A papal Bull officially dissolved the Knights Templar in 1312. However, in Portugal with the support of King Dinis, they changed their name to The Order of Christ and survived much longer and finally dissolved in 1910. The mystery and fascination of the Templars lives on with the many spiritual neo/revival groups today.
