Herculaneum – Ancient Sites  Coral/Gold/Green

Herculaneum is an ancient Roman city on the Bay of Naples destroyed by Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The town was buried by twenty metres of ash and mud, not to be rediscovered until 1709 by a man digging a well. This small town with its luxury villas is almost a time capsule with many treasures intact. Herculaneum (Ercolano in Italian) in the region of Campania is a remarkable place to visit with the remains of mosaics, frescos, roofs, beds, doors, food and those that did not survive. Parts of Herculaneum will never be unearthed because a city was built over it. Archaeologists hope to find the remains of ancient libraries to solve many of Italy’s ancient secrets. Herculaneum is enchanting; you can almost see the people going about their lives.
