Fan: European Style – Black Lace
The folding fan as we know it today originated in China and Japan 3000 years ago and were picked up by traders to sell to European countries. Other types of early fans are found in the cultures of the Etruscans, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and other countries with high temperatures. The Chinese and Japanese cultures created art forms with the fan; dance, opera, ceremonies, social occasions and the classical Geisha made the fan an importance status item. Some of the really elaborate fans were only for the wealthy and made from mother of pearl, ivory, precious stones, tortoiseshell, gold and silver. Highly skilled artist from China and Japan hand paint on wood and paper to create modern fans in the traditional designs.
