Religious pilgrimages were important to people of the middle ages and continue today. The El Camino Way, or pilgrimage goes through Portugal and Spain to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela; where the remains of the Apostle Saint James are said to be buried. This experiential journey is a spiritual wonder whether you are a Christian or not. It is a life changing pilgrimage where you should let your intuition and personal insights uplift and guide you. Who knows what you will discover and who you will meet on this holy trail. The scallop shell was used as a symbol of proof that someone had completed the pilgrimage to Santiago and back in medieval times. The shell symbol marks the way on the various Camino trails.
