This wooden cross from Rome is slightly engraved with the image of bread (wheat) and wine (cup) – known as the Eucharist or Holy Communion. This symbol shows an important ritual at the heart of the Christian religion. The Eucharist is a re-enactment of the Last Supper, the final meal that Jesus Christ shared with his disciples before his arrest, and eventual crucifixion. At the meal Jesus ate bread and wine and instructed his disciples to do the same in memory of him. IHS is a Greek abbreviation of Jesus Christ.
