Christian Fish symbol

The symbol of the fish is the earliest Christian symbol; it pre-dates the Christian cross by 3 centuries making it around 2000 years old. The Greek word for fish (ICHTUS), works as an acrostic for I = Jesus, C = Christ, TH = God’s, U = Son, S = Saviour. Jesus’ ministry is associated with fish because he chose several fishermen as disciples and called them “fishers of men.”

When Christianity reached the Roman world it was welcomed like many other cults of the day, but as it became more popular its beliefs threaten the state religion and the persecutions began. The fish symbol was not an obvious sign to non-Christians – it was said that a Christian would draw one arc of the fish in the sand and another Christian would complete the circle. If the other person was non-Christian the secret would be safe as a curved line was indistinct. The fish symbol of early Christianity has made a strong revival in the last 50 years, with its pure and empowering message of Jesus and his disciples.
